POETRY READING & BOOK LAUNCH PARTY: MILK TONGUE by Irène Mathieu

Join us for a poetry reading featuring Irène Mathieu and Lauren Alleyne, in celebration of Mathieu's new poetry collection, milk tongue (Deep Vellum Press). The reading will be followed by a book sale and signing, and light refreshments will be provided.

Irène Mathieu’s third collection, milk tongue, refers to the layer of milk that coats a baby’s tongue, which often is a challenge to distinguish from thrush, the overgrowth of naturally occurring yeast. As poet and pediatrician, Mathieu explores how we diagnose and investigate where normal consumption and overconsumption meet. How do we learn what to desire? What happens when what we want is destructive to our world? How might we reconceive of (be)longing in a way that rejects overconsumption?

These poems suggest, “what if, more than place, it’s about sound?” In milk tongue Mathieu uses haibun, long poems, and experimental forms to explore what we inherit or pass on – privilege, oppression, anxiety, “hypnagogic conjure,” and a warming earth – and envisage how, through deep attention to the emotional vibrations under the surface of these phenomena, we might become “both human and an / animal worthy of this speck of dust.”

Irène P. Mathieu (she/her) is an academic pediatrician, writer, and public health researcher. She is author of Grand Marronage (Switchback Books, 2019), which won Editor's Choice for the Gatewood Prize and runner-up for the Cave Canem/Northwestern Prize; orogeny (Trembling Pillow Press, 2017), which won the Bob Kaufman Book Prize; and the galaxy of origins (dancing girl press & studio, 2014). Irène is an Assistant Professor of Pediatrics and Assistant Co-Director of the Program in Health Humanities at the University of Virginia. For more information please visit irenemathieu.com.

These personal accounts of parenthood, loss, race, exile, dreams both realized and abandoned, all find expression through a common choreography for body and camera, offering an intimate glimpse into the performers’ inner and outer worlds. The work culminates in an interactive 13th film that unites all 12 journeys in a virtual ensemble that invites audiences to chart their own course across 8 countries in 5 languages.

Pictures Every Day Session I

REGISTER HERE.

Join artist Sebastien Boncy at Visible Records for a two-session workshop on daily photo-art practice.

First session is Sunday, October 2nd
Second session is Sunday, October 9th

Both sessions are 2-4PM.

"In this workshop we will look at art as a practice that prioritizes discovery and healing. A daily, meditative practice of image making that invites the world in with minimal a priori understandings, and that opens doors for the image maker to be affected by the way they are processing the world, by their own photographs.

This workshop will happen in two sessions. The first session consists of a short presentation to the participants that covers my own experiences with daily practice, how to fold such a practice into a life, and looking at some well-known photographers as potential exemplars. This session would also include a discussion portion where the participants can discuss the potential, limits, and ethics of such a practice.  The second session would take place after the participants had had some time to try out their versions of the daily practice. It would be a time to share their experiences, and discuss concerns and possibilities going forward." - Sebastien Boncy

"Any Person I've Robbed Was Judged By Me," a solo exhibition by Sebastien Boncy, opens in the Visible Records gallery with a reception on October 7th, 2022 from 6PM onwards. The show runs until December 2nd, 2022.

Sebastien Boncy, born in Haiti and shipwrecked in Texas, is all six members of the Pugilist Press collective. In the last decade, he’s maintained a hyperlocal practice centered around an online photographic archive of the city: Purple Time Space Swamp. Sebastien is currently doing the adjunct shuffle in the City of Syrup. He takes pictures daily, distributes them freely, does it for the culture.

Jazz Night! Michael Bisio with Zakaria Ismail

The Charlottesville Jazz Society and WTJU present bassist Michael Bisio. On June 11th at Visible Records, 1740 Broadway Street, The Charlottesville Jazz Society and WTJU present Michael Bisio in a solo acoustic bass performance, with opener Zakaria Ismail. Bisio is touring in support of his new solo bass recording Inimitable.

As one of the very finest bassists operating in New York and around the world, Bisio has both the facility and vision required to pull off a solo bass album that holds one’s interest throughout. Bisio has the ability to spin out a story when he’s playing, no matter how free and undefined is the setting in which he operates, always keeping the listener in thrall. Bisio has never been timid to test the perimeters of the standup bass’s range of timbres, rapidly jump-cutting from idea to idea, tossing in frequent clips of Mingus, Ornette and other jazz greats. He uses his bow one moment with the stateliness of a classical music performer, then ditch it and attack his instrument with the inventiveness of the top-flight jazz artist that he is. Bisio’s playing exemplifies the physical and sensory aspects of the bass, infiltrating the listener at his core. He is a working musician who digs down deep to create a profoundly earthy timbre that compares to that of the great Charlie Haden.

Opening for Michael Bisio will be Richmond violinist/electronics artist Zakaria Ismail.

The concert at Visible Records will begin at 8 pm. A suggested donation of $10 is requested.

For more information visit cvillejazz.org or call (434) 249-6191.

"Make A Distinction" Screening

Make a Distinction
16mm film transferred to digital video, color, sound, 62 min
Kera MacKenzie & Andrew Mausert-Mooney, 2021

A family rests in the shade of a C-47 warcraft. An army installation contains the last remnants of an endangered grassland ecology. Young filmmakers hone their skills making cop shows on Chicago streets.

A debut hybrid non-fiction feature, Make a Distinction maps unseen forces of US imperialism through ostensibly disconnected aspects of daily life. If you can’t name the enemy do you become it?

Kera MacKenzie and Andrew Mausert-Mooney are Chicago-based anti-imperialist artists working primarily in film, video, live broadcast, and installation. Their works have screened and exhibited at venues including the International Film Festival Rotterdam, the American Film Institute, Anthology Film Archives, the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago, UnionDocs, and Chicago Underground Film Festival.
