Jazz Night! Michael Bisio with Zakaria Ismail

The Charlottesville Jazz Society and WTJU present bassist Michael Bisio. On June 11th at Visible Records, 1740 Broadway Street, The Charlottesville Jazz Society and WTJU present Michael Bisio in a solo acoustic bass performance, with opener Zakaria Ismail. Bisio is touring in support of his new solo bass recording Inimitable.

As one of the very finest bassists operating in New York and around the world, Bisio has both the facility and vision required to pull off a solo bass album that holds one’s interest throughout. Bisio has the ability to spin out a story when he’s playing, no matter how free and undefined is the setting in which he operates, always keeping the listener in thrall. Bisio has never been timid to test the perimeters of the standup bass’s range of timbres, rapidly jump-cutting from idea to idea, tossing in frequent clips of Mingus, Ornette and other jazz greats. He uses his bow one moment with the stateliness of a classical music performer, then ditch it and attack his instrument with the inventiveness of the top-flight jazz artist that he is. Bisio’s playing exemplifies the physical and sensory aspects of the bass, infiltrating the listener at his core. He is a working musician who digs down deep to create a profoundly earthy timbre that compares to that of the great Charlie Haden.

Opening for Michael Bisio will be Richmond violinist/electronics artist Zakaria Ismail.

The concert at Visible Records will begin at 8 pm. A suggested donation of $10 is requested.
