Assistant Director

Visible Records is looking for an Assistant Director. The Assistant Director will play a key role in development efforts, working alongside the Founding Director to research, apply for and execute approximately 4 grants per year that support artist projects, residencies and the general operating expenses of Visible Records. The Assistant Director will also play a key role in studio management, helping to ensure that the daily operations of Visible Records run smoothly.

Ideally, this role will begin training in late Summer alongside our current Assistant Director, bryan ortiz, with the expectation of beginning the full scope of the role by October 2024. We have some flexibility on timing and we are open to discussing alternatives.

In parallel with working with community partners on programs and events, the assistant director will have opportunities to coordinate residencies, curate exhibitions, and organize events with artists they would like to see at Visible Records.

This position will report to Founding Director, Morgan Ashcom, and is broadly accountable to the Visible Records studio community and space.

Responsibilities will include:

  • Management of Visible Records website, online archives, and monthly newsletter (Squarespace build)

  • Organizing and updating common space calendar

    • Interfacing with community organizers to schedule recurring and one-off events

    • Providing further information and orientations for organizers who are new to the space

    • Providing assistance or guidance if issues arise during or after events

  • Managing artist studio rentals

    • Providing orientations and lease agreements for incoming artists

    • Interfacing with studio artist to coordinate around events, questions, or issues happening in the common or studio spaces

    • Listing available studios when vacancies occur

    • Reviewing studio applications and interviewing potential studio artists

  • Overseeing exhibitions schedules and installations

    • Disseminating flyers, press releases, and other exhibition materials to local media, arts networks, and community partners

    • Organizing exhibitions wall graphics, files/imagery, payments, and installation

    • Providing support with exhibition installations

  • Organizing and managing Artist-In-Residence program

    • Orienting new residences, showing them their resources, and setting them up with basic need when arriving

    • Assisting artist with aquiring material needed during their residency

    • Maintaining and cleaning residency living space during transitions and off periods

    • Coordinate reimbursements for materials, travel, and food costs during residency periods

  • Assisting with maintenance of garden areas (Common field, Solitary Gardens, and Operations of Care)

  • Developing programming for the space

Skills/experience we are looking for:

  • Ability to communicate directly and in a timely manner

  • Fundraising/ Grant writing experience

  • Familiarity with Google Suite

  • Experience with gallery installation/deinstallation/art handling; Experience with most common hand and power tools.

  • Good organizational habits

  • Ability to communicate and interact with folks from many backgrounds and experiences

  • Consistency

Time commitment & compensation:

This is a full-time salary position. The Assistant director should expect to be at Visible Records Monday - Friday and some weekends.

Salary: $50,000 with the intention of growing this salary as we strengthen our financial capacity.

Additional Benefits: A studio/office at Visible Records. Flexible time-off with ability to work remotely, if needed. Additional compensation is available to support independently secured health insurance.
