Visible Records Group Show

December 9th, 2022—February 4th, 2023
Opening Reception December 9th, 2022 / 6PM onwards

Last year, we named our first-ever Group Show, Direct Sow, as in the process of planting seeds directly in the ground, rather than transplanting starts. Direct sowing can feel a little riskier because you start with something that seems impossibly small and dormant (a tiny seed). It is also the most rewarding, however, when full plants eventually sprout out of the ground like magic. The title was a nod to our first year of exhibitions, programming, and more. We jumped in head first with little idea of how things would unfold, but big hopes that the space would nurture a lot of possibilities for local artists and community organizers. Although the content will change, we feel this theme continues to capture our intention. For now, our annual Group Show will be called Direct Sow, and this year, we’re honored to have it juried by curator Erika Hirugami

Erika Hirugami is, a first-generation Mexican immigrant, formerly undocumented. Her recent Master's thesis from Chicanx Studies at UCLA is entitled “Political Art Action: The Aesthetics of Undocumentedness.” Hirugami also holds BAs in the fields of Art History, Chicano Studies, and Mexican Studies from UCLA. She is currently a lecturer and doctoral candidate at UCLA, where she challenges the aesthetics of undocumentedness through contemporary Latinx art. Erika Hiruagmi is also part of the curatorial team for the UNDOC+Collective Open Call, a residency and exhibition taking place at Visible Records in Summer 2023.
